The 2011 edition of South By Southwest (SXSW) Festival, the inspiration behind Toronto’s own North By Northeast (NXNE) Festival, unfolds next month in Austin, Texas. Once primarily known as a music festival, SXSW’s film lineup is quickly making a name for itself. While the CanCon talk on local film lips is all about Denis Villeneuve‘s Incendies and, uh…FUBAR: Balls to the Wall, this year’s selection also includes work by two directors who’ve shown work at Reel Asian: Dave Boyle (White On Rice, RA 2009) and P.J. Raval (Lead Role: Father, RA 2006).
Boyle’s feature-length Surrogate Valentine will have its world premiere at SXSW before closing this year’s San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival. The film stars Bay Area musician Goh Nakamura, who has been a part of the Reel Asian family ever since performing at Live Score, our inaugural live music showcase in 2006. Raval’s raunchy 4-minute short Bustin’ Brown is the fourth installment in the CHRISTEENE Video Collection and is, shall we say, an ASSet to SXSW’s notorious Midnight Shorts programme.Tweet this!
