Filmmaker Update: Gerry Balasta, Mingu Kim, Jeff Chiba Stearns

Check out what RA filmmakers Gerry Balasta, Mingu Kim and Jeff Chiba Stearns are up to…Gerry Balasta is currently working on The Solar Champion, a new comedy about a family of dreamers and the search for the next Manny Pacquiao.  You can follow the progress of this project here.  Reel Asian screened Gerry’s first feature, The Mountain Thief in 2010.

A Drummer’s Passion by RA filmmaker Mingu Kim will be screening at the 2012 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival on May 11, 9:45PM at the Directors Guild of America.  A Drummer’s Passion was screened at Reel Asian in 2011.  Mingu is also currently launching the first ever Arirang Korea Smartphone Film Festival.  They are still accepting submissions of short films/videos made on a smartphone.  Must include Korean elements.  More details here.

Jeff Chiba Stearns who was recently in Toronto for a workshop and screening of One Big Hapa Family at Hart House, is currently working on a new documentary about the challenges faced by multiethnic patients searching for bone marrow donors.  To help complete the film, Jeff and his team have launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise awareness and to cover costs of production. Help them reach their goal of $25,000!  Reel Asian screened Jeff’s One Big Hapa Family in 2010 and short film Yellow Sticky Notes in 2009.
