Austin’s annual mega music, film and interactive conference South by Southwest (SXSW) takes place March 8-16, 2013 and attracts almost 25,000 attendees. This year’s event includes features, shorts, narratives, docs, cult classics….you name it, they’ll have it. Here are our Asian picks from the bunch:
- Filipino American director PJ Raval’s new feature (world premiere) in the Documentary Spotlight programme about LGBTQ seniors called Before You Know It. Reel Asian screened Raval’s Lead Role: Father in 2006.
- Japanese-born, LA-based filmmaker Junya Sakino has a world premiere in the Visions programme called Sake-Bomb
- Directors Omar Mullick & Bassam Tariq present a Pakistani film called These Birds Walk in the Visions programme; Reel Asian’s 2012 So You Think You Can Pitch? winner Sonejuhi Sinha edited the film – she’ll be in Austin for the world premiere
- German director Andrea Thile has the North American premiere of her doc feature And Who Taught You To Drive? in the SXGlobal programme. It follows three people – a German moving to India, an American moving to Japan, and a South Korean living in Germany – as they go through retaking their driver’s license tests in a foreign country
