    The Past Is Present – Ngo Van Sac Solo Exhibition
    Date: Thu. April 4, 2013 - Sun. May 5, 2013.
    Location: The East Gallery (334 Dundas Street West) - Toronto


    Ngo Van Sac, winner of Vietnam’s 2012 Dogma national portrait competition, explores the theme of temporal overlap from a variety of compelling perspectives in his solo exhibit, The Past Is The Present, at The East Gallery. His wood-engravings and –burnings, paintings and collages evocatively capture the paradox of a country rushing to modernize while at the same time holding fast to images of the past.

    Exhibit Dates: April 4 – May 5. Open daily from 9:00AM – 11:00PM

    Opening Reception is on Saturday April 6, from 3:00PM – 6:00 PM

    TIFF Kids International Film Festival

    Images Festival

    Established in 1987, the Images Festival is the largest festival in North America for experimental and independent moving image culture, showcasing the innovative edge of international contemporary media art both on and off the screen. Images has presented thousands of vanguard media-based projects in its 24-year history and is committed to an expanded concept of film and video practice: Alongside film and video screenings (ON SCREEN), the festival presents groundbreaking live performances (LIVE IMAGES), media art installations (OFF SCREEN) in local galleries and new media projects by many renowned Canadian and international artists.

    This year’s festival takes place April 11-20, 2013. Full programming will be announced at the Catalogue Launch Party on March 21, 2013.

    Sonal Raje lives in Guelph, and has been painting for past two decades. With diploma in applied arts from Mumbai India, her recent exhibitions in Canada, Hungary, India , USA and recently in Italy, have successfully launched her career as a professional painter. Sonal explains that cultural roots in India, travels through Europe, and the natural beauty of her hometown Guelph contributed towards the new exhibition,” Profusion” . The exhibition displays around 18 paintings that richly embody the colors and abstract expression in form and value. Sonal experiments with texture but keeps her vision focused on balance and depth. Her acrylic paintings speak volumes about her experiences of travel and learning as she seeks her inspiration from nature and Canadian landscape.

    2013 Asian Hockey Championship and Cultural Event

    The Asian Hockey Championship & Cultural Event is an annual event that is dedicated to promoting hockey in the East Asian community.

    Registrations are now open for the Mens, Womens and Childrens division. The deadline for teams and players to register is on April 15, 2013 (must include playment to confirm placement)

    With 45 teams in 2012, participation and interest is growing to the 50 team mark (800 + players) and record level attendance at the free community skates, Marlies hockey lessons, skating lessons, cultural dances, performances and more! Over 2000 family, friends and members of the community are expected this year.

    Return of Old School Kung Fu Fest

    For our friends and readers in New York (or anyone planning to go to New York during mid-April), be sure to check out the Return of Old School Kung Fu Fest on the weekend of April 19-21!

    Subway Cinemas is going through the vaults (with films loaned from American Genre Film Archive and Taipei Economic Cultural Office New York) to present a special retrospective of critically-acclaimed and cult favourites of kung fu movies from the 70s and 80s.

    Don’t miss the chance to see films such as Sammo Hung’s ODD COUPLE or Gordon Liu’s SHAOLIN AND WU-TANG on the big screen!

    An Evening with Jake Shimabukuro

    Sensational Japanese-American ukulele master Jake Shimabukuro has taken the four-string, two-octave instrument to places no one has gone before, performing awesome music that ranges from jazz, blues, and rock to bluegrass, classical, and folk.     Jake has his own record label, and tours extensively in the U.S. A. and Japan. He has completely rewritten the book on the possibilities of the ukulele — and is adding new chapters with every CD he records.
