As interpreted by Guo Wenjing, one of China’s most respected contemporary composers, and critically-acclaimed stage director/filmmaker Atom Egoyan, the gem-like opera Feng Yi Tang explores the epic tale of Diao Chan (soprano Shen Tiemei), one of the fabled Four Beauties of ancient China whose seductive charms ignite an empire-threatening rivalry between ruthless warlord Dong Zhuo and the brave General Lu Bu (countertenor Jiang Qihu).

Beyond his lauded film career, Oscar nominated director Atom Egoyan has lent equal passion to an array of theatre, opera and visual arts projects. Among these works is Feng Yi Ting, an opera based on the ancient Chinese tale of Diao Chan, whose beauty and seductive grace nearly toppled an empire. In discussion with New York Times culture reporter Daniel J. Wakin, Egoyan will touch on his diverse experiences in directing opera, compare and contrast Feng Yi Ting‘s evolution with his masterful staging of Salome for the Canadian Opera Company, and speak about his broader career.
